So after a couple of days scratching my head, it dawned on me that the white space below the google custom search box could be caused by an incorrect or missing setting for either the padding or margin. Well after a couple of minutes of trigging I soon found that Opera was displaying a 15 pixel'ish bottom margin so that has now been set to 0 pixels and that has sorted that problem, meaning that it should now display the same whatever browser it is viewed in.
One thing that I was unable to change about the site search box when it was powered by Live search was what happened when you clicked on a result in the results overlay, what used to happen was that a new window or tab would open the page you clicked on. Now that I have changed to a google custom search engine I have been able to customise it and set it to load the page in the existing window, that way you won't end up with multiple tabs or windows opening.
Oh and the issue with the white space beneath the search box when viewed in Opera is still unresolved, I have tried a number of things all of which have be unsuccesful, I have logged a report with Opera, in the past they have been very helpful in sorting out problems affecting pages displayed in their browser, so fingers crossed they will come up with an answer. I will continue to try and find a solution myself as well, but there is no knowing how long it will take, I do have other jobs which are of a higher priority not only on the website but out in the factory and timber yard as well.
Following up on my earlier post I have now changed the site search box found on all our pages at http://www.eandhbaxendale.com to a google custom search powered search box.
This change means more results are displayed when a search is made, the old Live Search recently returned few results, it seems most of our pages have disappeared from the Live Search Index, that is something I am trying to sort out but it seems Microsoft aren't in any hurry to update their Index.
Google on the other hand have a far superior webmaster tools section that allows you to submit new sitemaps and see exactly how many of the entry's are actually being indexed.
I have now found out that there is a slight problem with the google custom search when displayed in Opera 10 browser, for some reason Opera is displaying an empty div below the search box. I am working on a fix but it is only a problem with the appearance, the actual search box still works and the results are still displayed.
The search box on our website at http://www.eandhbaxendale.com is powered by Microsoft's Live Search, it seems however that Live search isn't returning many, if any results, so I am working on integrating google site search. Initial testing looks good, I just have to sort out the styling and tidying up the new code before adding it to each page.
As you may have noticed there is a new addition to the left side of the page, the site and web search panel which is powered by Microsoft’s Live Search. This feature has been added to all pages and the existing collapsable panels updated to match the new style.
