Enquiry forms and IE9

Late last year it came to my attention that there was an issue with the Internet Explorer 9 beta version which was preventing some of the enquiry forms from being submitted by telling the user that they had failed to complete a required field when the form was validated. Unfortunately the scripts that validate the form are a number of years old now and won’t be getting updated so I am in the process of testing out the jquery validation scripts and so far so good, once I am happy that the test form works I will begin the process of upgrading the existing forms to work with the new scripts. In the mean time I would advise against using IE9 beta when trying to place an enquiry.
The new look Place an Order Form
Update 6/1/2011:
I am now happy enough with the new form validation to start rolling it out, the first to get the upgrade is the Place an Order form which is used to convert an existing enquiry into an order. The only minor issue that I have to sort out is the title tags for each of the text boxes, which are showing “<b>” and “</b>” which is the piece of code that makes text bold, the problem is those title tags double up as the validation error message so they need those tags, no doubt I will find a solution at some point.

Update 8/1/2011:
I have now upgraded the  General Enquiry form with the new jquery validation, the old form was split across three accordion panels, the new form is split across two tabbed panels instead, the first tab is the enquiry form that asks for your name, contact details, and your message to the design team, with the second tab containing the file upload facility.  With the old form you were limited to uploading three files, since we have now moved to new web and emails hosts our maximum combined file attachment size has increased from 10MB to 25MB, so I have added two more file attachment fields bringing the total to five.  The file upload facility is something I have decided to look into further, specifically making the process a bit more user friendly, currently the user doesn’t really know what is going on until they are redirect to the successful enquiry page, it’s not really an issue if the attachments are only small but once you get to a few MB’s it can feel like a long time during which not much seems to happen, hopefully I will be able to find away of bringing some sort of progress indicator into the system.

Update 9/1/2011:
I have now upgraded the Trussed Rafter Enquiry Form with the new jquery validation and the tabbed panel layout as seen on the other recently updated forms.  The only thing I still have left to do on this form is reinstate the feet and inches to millimetres calculator that was found in the sidebar of the old form.

Send us your feedback

You may have noticed a ‘Feedback’ tab located along the left side of your browser, these have been added to every page enabling you to send us feedback, comments, or bugs direct from any page without leaving the page.  Clicking on the tab reveals a simple form three field form, a box for your comment, a box for you to enter the subject (e.g. feedback, bug etc.) and a box to enter your email address, this final box is optional and will only need completing if you want a reply from us.  So give it a go and let us know what you think of the site, what you like, what you don’t like, and any suggestions for improving the site or individual pages.  Oh! and thanks to getbarometer.com which is powering the tab and form.

New Domains

As part of the big re-arrange of the website hosting, and our domains, I can now confirm that three new domains, www.eandhbaxendale.ltd.uk , www.eandhbaxendale.co.uk and www.easi-joist-timberframe.biz are now live and are just another way of making our website even more accessible to the masses.  Using the new features available to me via cpanel I am now able to ‘park’ multiple domains on one website, meaning whichever addresss you use you will be able to access our full website, with our previous web host, I could only forward www.baxtruss.co.uk to www.eandhbaxendale.com which had the dissadvantage of not being able to provide full page addresses such as www.baxtruss.co.uk/site-map.

Over the next few weeks I hope to setup a new page on the website specifcally about using easi-joist to create timber frame properties, using the Boars Den Barn project as an example, once that is in place I will then setup a redirect on the www.easi-joist-timberframe.biz domain to take visitors directly to it.  I wasn’t actually planning on purchasing the .biz domain but .net magazine and domainmonster.com were offering a free domain to each reader, so who would turn that down, and while pondering over what domain to get the Boars Den Barn project popped into my head, so thats when I decided on www.easi-joist-timberframe.biz

Website Move

Today I have begun the process of moving the website and domain from fasthosts to ezpz hosting, who I am sure will provide a better service.

UPDATE:The website and blog have now been moved over to ezpz hosting, thanks to Dan at ezpz who did that for us.

UPDATE: Our domain www.eandhbaxendale.comhas now completed its move over to ezpz hosting, thanks again to Dan at ezpz who guided me through a couple of niggles along the way.

Website Maintenance

Parts of the website were unavailable since yesterday evening, it seems I forgot to change on line of code on a few of the pages which resulted in them not displaying when called.  I have been moving the website over into wordpress one page at a time, and well yesterday I decided it was the turn of the home page, which meant making a few changes in wordpress itself and to the location of a few of the websites key files.  Anyway I have now tested all the pages and they are working again, at least I will know for next time.

Site-wide Changes

After a few hours trying to get a php if… else statement working I was finally able to extend the dynamic highlighting effect for the navigation panel into the blog, so if you are on the 2006 archive page the 2006 archive will be highlighted in the navigational panel.  I have also moved the header, search box, menu, and page footer for the main site into separate files, to make it easier to update them and to reduce the size of the individual pages.  At the same time I have converted most of the site to php rather than html, this means if I need to include something from the blog in the main site I can without any problems, the only part of the site that isn’t php now are the error pages which will remain asp for now.

New Theme Switched On

So after a bit of tweaking I have decided to bite the bullet and switch the new theme on, I have managed to sort out a few issues, some remain but at the moment I am not to concerned about them.  I will however continue to tweak a few things every so often until I am completely happy with it.  If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to use to comment form (if it works) or  the general enquiry form to send them in.

Blog Theme Update

So a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had started working on a new theme for the blog, a theme based upon the rest of eandhbaxendale.com, well with some help from Luke over at lunamedia.co.uk I can tell you that it is getting closer to being finished, everything seemed to be working when I took it for a test drive earlier today, however I have decided not to switch it on just yet.

There are a few issues to sort out first, which are mainly to do with the styles used.  There is also an issue with left aligned images and the post meta data floating up into the image, if the image extends past the last line of text in the post, the temporary fix is to right align them but I would like to find a better solution if possible.  Time permitting I would like to have it up and running by next week, I would also like to finish off the trussed rafter types and trussed rafter eaves details pages as well which I started to update a few weeks ago but got distracted by other jobs at work.
